It is when we celebrate the day that changed everything.
Dare 2 Share - Yesterday I rented a movie at the local video store. The guy at the counter said: enjoy your movie, its due back Sunday before noon. So I asked: youre open on Easter Sunday? He replied: Oh yeah, its just another Sunday.
Perhaps to some it truly is just another Sunday. To the Christian, it is THE Sunday. It is when we celebrate the day that changed everything. It is the focal point of our entire belief system and the deciding factor in which religion is true.
What is Christianity without Easter? A ridiculous ruse, a spiteful scam, a despicable deception and perverted propaganda. It is like a person without a beating heart: dead.
The apostle Paul put it this way:
If Christ was not raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your trust in God is useless. And we apostles would all be lying about God, for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave, but that can't be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless, and you are still under condemnation for your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ have perished! And if we have hope in Christ only for this life, we are the most miserable people in the world. (I Corinthians 15:14-18)
Our faith leaves no room for error or mistake. There are no opinions about what happened on Easter, only the facts. Either Christ came back from the dead, or He is still in the grave and we are the biggest fools who ever lived.
Heres the really interesting part: some of the most miserable looking people are actually the ones who claim to believe in the Resurrection! No wonder many unbelievers think Christianity is about rules, regulations, and definitely no fun- weve painted that picture for them. Of all humans on this planet, we should be the ones with a simply irresistible attitude, because Easter reminds us that God has got it all under control. So by way of reminder, here is the snapshot of what makes this day different.
Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled aside the stone and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples he has been raised from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember, I have told you." The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to find the disciples to give them the angel's message. (Matthew 28:1-8)
We too have been charged with giving a message, and even though we may be frightened, we are filled with joy, because Easter is not just another Sunday, it is the day to remember how to make sense out of a completely senseless world.
Questions:
1) Would most people describe you as filled with joy?
2) How has the Resurrection changed you as a person?
3) What if Easter was just another Sunday?
